Stichting Intabazwe Foundation:

The misson of Stichting Intabazwe is to improve the quality of life for the poorest of people living in South Africa. The foundation has initially focused on children and youth.

Human Development in South Africa:

Stichting Intabazwe Foundation sponsors projects in Geluksdal near Johannesburg and in Athlone near Cape Town.

During their 4th tour of South Africa Hanni Engendahl and Jos Palmen read in the Lonely Planet travel guide 'South Africa' that the tourist office in Harrismith organizes trips to the neighbouring township of Intabazwe. Muhle Joyce Mthembu, director from the Harrismith Marketing Bureau, showed Hanni and Jos around Intabazwe. She is often called 'Mother Theresa' by Intabazwe residents due to the help she has previously provided them.

As a result of being deeply touched by the human misery they observed, Hanni and Jos made a personal commitment to help these people in some manner. Through further discussions with Joyce, they learned of a dilemma that exists in South Africa, which requires that all children must have a school uniform, or at least a part of it, to be admitted to school. But most families need every Rand to survive and cannot afford these 'optional' costs. Hanni and Jos decided to buy shoes and school jerseys for needy children.

After returning home, Hanni and Jos began efforts to create a mechanism that would expand donations to the children of Intabazwe. Stichting Intabazwe was founded on 16 Dec 2002 and registration at the Dutch Chamber of Commerce was completed. Foundation committee members besides Jos include Corry Beckers and Zef Jeurissen, both of whom live in Munstergeleen - The Netherlands.

The name:

Intabazwe is a Zulu-word that means 'flat mountain' or 'tablemountain'. Township Intabazwe lies on a flat mountain near the small town of Harrismith in the Eastern Freestate at the N3, the main road between Johannisburg and Durban. Stichting Intabazwe was founded as a result of our visit to this township, so its name was chosen for the foundation.
